How to Camp During the Rainy Season

September 15, 2022 Leave a Comment

How should you camp during the rainy season?

  1. Make sure your tent is waterproof
  2. Keep your tent elevated and protected
  3. Stick to lightweight clothes and avoid cotton.
  4. Bring waterproof outerwear
  5. Be prepared with lots of plastic and waterproof bags
  6. Cook outside and eat inside the tent.

The rain should never dampen your camping spirit. With the rainy season approaching, you should know how to camp during the rainy season instead of avoiding it altogether. At times, it can be uncomfortable, but this is another chance for you to be more attuned to nature. Something is comforting about listening to the pitter-patter of raindrops on your campsite.

You just need to have the right gear ready to make the most of this camping experience.

Make sure your tent is waterproof

Make sure your tent is waterproof

One of the essentials of camping is a tent. This is where you’ll be sleeping and storing some of your essentials on the trip. During the rainy season, make sure that it is made of waterproof material.

Taking shelter on a waterproof roof tent can help keep you dry the whole time. To increase your living space, attach an annex to it to make room for more people or storage on the trip.

Keep your tent elevated and protected

Even waterproof tents have their limits. Find a spot on the camping ground that will shelter you one way or another. These are usually found on higher ground. Avoid positioning your tent at the bottom of hills & mountains or near rivers and running water. Bodies of water tend to swell as the evening passes.

Once you’ve settled on a spot, the next step is to protect your tent. Come prepared with many tarps. Before setting up the tent, lay a heavy-duty tarp underneath the floor to avoid flooding. Make sure that it does not extend outside of your tent to avoid rain rolling into the tent floor.

You can also set up a tarp above your tent to keep it extra dry. Set it up at an angle for rainwater to easily slide off. Keeping it flat means that the water settles in the middle.

You can also choose to get a roof tent which you can set up at the top of your car. This will give you immediate elevation without having to worry about going up a hill or mountain.

Stick to lightweight clothes and avoid cotton

The last thing you want to happen is for your clothes to get damp from the rain. Avoid bringing clothes made from cotton. This material takes a lot of time to dry.

On these rainy camping trips, opt for lightweight clothing. These should be made from nylon and synthetic material. Clothing made from these materials is made for water to just slide off.

Bring waterproof outerwear

Getting wet from the rain leaves a lot of us in a sour mood. Not only can you catch a cold from staying in wet clothes, but you may also wait for a long time for the clothes to dry. To avoid this, you have to get your layers correct.

Be sure to have your rain clothes ready when camping in the rain. These are your rain jackets, pants, and boots. Put them on quickly once you see rain clouds about to settle on your camping site.

Be prepared with lots of plastic and waterproof bags

Be prepared with lots of plastic and waterproof bags

It’s inevitable for things to get wet on this camping trip. Come prepared with places to store anything that gets wet.

Use a waterproof dry bag to store your essentials like your phone, charger, and other electrical devices. It can also be used as an emergency kit to keep spare clothes, food, and medical supplies.

Big black garbage bags are your best friends. They can be used as alternative rain covers for your packs. You can also store soaked clothes inside. There’ll be lots of them, from your clothes, jackets, and shoes. On top of that, you can also store dry firewood in them to save them from getting rain.

Cook outside and eat inside the tent

Under no circumstances should you cook inside a tent. This can present possible fire hazards. Cook all food outside the tent and bring them inside to eat.

To avoid getting your food and cooking supplies rained on, you can set up a gazebo outside the tent. This will give you enough dry ground to prep your ingredients on the table and cook them over the fire.

Key Takeaway

It’s not so hard to learn how to camp during the rainy season. It just takes extra preparation to ensure that you and your things are safe from the rain. If you come prepared, you’ll end up being dry for most of the trip. But, when you do get soaked, cool down, change quickly, and enjoy the rest of your trip.

To make sure you have all the essentials, you can check out the camping gear here at Overland Kings. We have everything from gazebos, roof tents, and cooking equipment.
