7 Common Illnesses And Injuries To Prepare For When Camping

October 21, 2022 Leave a Comment

What are the common illnesses and injuries to prepare for when camping?

  1. Cuts
  2. Falling
  3. Heatstroke
  4. Sunburns
  5. Rashes
  6. Animal Bites
  7. Burns

Camping is fun, but you also have to prepare for the worst. Many of us feel safe when we prepare the essential camping gear for our trip, but let’s not forget the importance of having knowledge and skills to handle common illnesses and injuries to prepare for when camping.

If you do get injured while camping, then this could pose a problem — it can take hours before medical help can get to where you are! That’s why you need to read up on the common illnesses and injuries to prepare for when camping, and the treatments we believe are essential for anyone who’s planning a trip soon!

Cuts

Cuts

A knife is an essential camping item that every camper must bring to prepare a fire, and food, and to use for emergencies. Nonetheless, cut accidents usually happen and their severity depends on how deep or simple the cut is.

Cuts can also happen while you’re out exploring or setting up camp, as you’re exposed to plenty of rough surfaces (such as plants and rocks).

Although you only need to have a first-aid kit to clean the wound, it’s still always better to prepare yourself and know how to properly treat deep cuts. Moreover, make sure you’re being careful when using a knife or when you’re moving around camp.

Falling

Falling

The ground outdoors can be rocky, slippery, or just too uneven. So there’s a big possibility that you (or someone else in your camping group) can trip and fall. This is especially common if you’re planning on doing activities like crossing a river or hiking a trail.

If you’re going on a trip with kids, make sure that you’re keeping your eyes on them because 50% of nonfatal injuries to children are caused by falling.

Smaller injuries can be treated by simply applying antibacterial solution and bandages to the affected area of the body. But if it’s severe like broken or sprained bones, you should know how to properly apply a splint on it.

Heatstroke

Heatstroke normally happens because of dehydration and during summer. Since we’re in a tropical country, we are exposed to heat every day. That’s why don’t forget to bring lots of water, and purification tablets (just in case you’re drinking tap water from a campsite), and observe the color of your pee. Make sure that it’s clear because the yellower it is, the more water you need to drink.

Sunburns

Going to a camp is also a great way of getting tan until the sunburn comes that can reach the first, second, and third degrees. It’s best to bring sunscreen, and apply a good amount on your skin every few hours during the day.

Rashes

At a campsite, there are many different kinds of plants that you can encounter. Some of them, however, can cause skin rashes and other negative reactions, which can be very uncomfortable to deal with.

So, it’s essential to research the campsite you plan on visiting before you go camping to know what types of plants are there, which ones you should avoid, and how to treat your skin in case you accidentally rub up your skin against them.

Animal Bites

Like plants, you also need to know what types of animals live in the area you’re planning to visit to prepare yourself. Many campers say that researching a campsite area and the animals living there is important because it gives you an idea of what might come near your campsite during your trip.

The common animals found near campsites include birds, snakes, and rodents. Make sure to bring medicine and other safety measures to prepare yourself just in case you get bitten by an animal.

Burns

Camping isn’t complete without a campfire, but having them becomes dangerous if you’re not careful. It’s important to know how to properly build a campfire and how to keep it controlled to avoid getting burned. Although it’s rare to experience second or third-degree burns on a trip, you still need to be prepared on how to treat second or third-degree burns.

If you’re with your children, make sure they stay away from fire. And, don’t forget to bring aloe vera and ointments for first-degree burns. Make sure to research what emergency first-aid you need to do if your burn gets worse, too.

Key Takeaway

As many campers say, good preparation is key to having a great and hassle-free camping trip. It’s better to stay knowledgeable and prepared for the worst during your adventure — especially when it comes to the common illnesses and injuries to prepare for when camping. When we know all these, our camping experience is guaranteed to be a safer experience for everyone.

To make sure you have all the first-aid supplies you need for the problems we’ve listed above, you should invest in the right kit. Here at Overland Kings, we have a first aid kit that has everything you need for a safe camping experience!
